An alumna of Greenwich University aims to shed light on the experiences of refugees.
We are excited to announce that the Team at the University of Greenwich is working in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Lewisham and we have organised a compelling program – Refugee Week at the University of Greenwich, which is a weeklong event centred around the theme of ‘Compassion’.
The event will be hosted at the University of Greenwich, Steven Lawrence Building, room SL 006.
Speaker at the event
Martina Ignatova
Immigration Solicitor and alumna of the University of Greenwich
Martina is an alumna of the University of Greenwich where she studied from 2014 until she graduated with LLB degree in 2017. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Amnesty Solicitors specialising in both personal and business immigration.
Since the start of her career in immigration law, asylum has been one of the immigration areas that Martina regularly advises clients on. She has assisted many individuals and families who have claimed asylum in the UK (many of whom have been granted refugee status) due to fear from persecution in their own country, for reasons of either race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.
Martina has, therefore, built an in-depth knowledge throughout the years in relation to the challenges faced by refugees and the obstacles that the refugees continue to face to this day, including but not limited to language barriers, adapting to cultural differences, lack of UK work experience and public misconception and discrimination.
Martina will join us during the Refugee Week at the University of Greenwich and she will discuss the different stages of the asylum process in the United Kingdom from initial application through to Refugee Status Determination. She will also explain what her role as a solicitor involves when providing legal assistance to asylum seekers and what can be done by each and every one of us to foster a more inclusive and welcoming society for all.
